Folktales & Fables: The Ugly Duckling

The story of the Ugly Duckling tells of a mother duck waiting for her eggs to hatch. When all the eggs have hatched, one remains that is much larger and different than the rest. When this egg finally hatches a dark grey duckling emerges. Very apparently looking differently than his peers.

The other animals and ducklings make fun of little duck. Bullying him, making him feel different, and excluding him. Because of this the little duck decides to run away from all he’s knows. He faces harsh winter weather and more rejection from other flocks of ducks and geese forcing him to spend a cold winter all alone.

When Spring arrives, little duck notices some swans swimming in the pond nearby. He glances down at his reflection and notices that he is not in fact a duck at all, but a beautiful swan.
